Roof Inspection

The Basics of Fall Roofing Care

As the leaves change color, and temperatures become cooler, autumn is the perfect time for roof maintenance. This investment protects the structural integrity of your home, keeps you comfortable year-round, and boosts efficiency. You can also extend the life of your roof with annual inspections and maintenance.

Cleaning Gutters and Downspouts

Debris such as leaves and twigs can accumulate in your gutters and downspouts. This creates clogs that prevent the proper flow of moisture. If moisture accumulates, it can seep underneath shingles and into your house. This increases your risk of structural damage and mold growth.

After manually removing leaves, seed pods, and other debris, flushing the gutters and downspouts is beneficial. This confirms there is a clear pathway available for moisture to travel through. If necessary, install downspout extensions to keep water at least 5 feet away from your foundation.

Inspecting and Repairing Shingles

Roof shingles typically have a long life expectancy, but there are several factors that can wear them down. After a long summer of exposure to UV rays, precipitation, insects, wildlife, and extreme temperatures, schedule an inspection. Checking for cracks, degranulation, and curling shingles allows for repairs. If shingles are missing, you’ll need to replace them.

You can do a visual inspection of your roof shingles from ground level. However, it’s important to have a professional climb onto your roof at least once a year to check on things. Even spotting a few loose shingles can prevent damage later. Not to mention, professionals can safely perform an inspection, so you won’t need to haul out your ladder.

Trimming Back Tree Branches and Landscaping

Fall is the perfect time to trim back some of the excess growth that took place over the summer. If tree branches are hanging over your roof, they can break off during a storm and cause damage. They can also scrape against your shingles, breaking them down prematurely.

Trim back foliage at least 6 to 10 feet from the edge of your roof. Remove any dead branches that are likely weak and ready to break. If large trees are near your home, consult a professional arborist for advice and assistance.

Checking Flashing Material

The flashing on your roof provides a tight seal between your house and the outdoors. This material is usually around your chimney, gutters, and skylights. Let a professional identify and replace any areas of flashing that have damage or appear worn. This stops wood rot and other structural issues during the fall and into the winter months.
